Yoga of 12-Step Recovery

Y12SR is holistic, community-based support for anyone dealing with their own addictive behaviors or is affected by those behaviors in others. Our community includes all addictions and members of all 12-step programs; however, you don't have to be a member of a 12-step program to attend.

No experience with yoga or meditation is necessary, and everyone is welcome. Y12SR isn't a replacement for treatment, medical advice, group or individual therapy, traditional 12-step support group meetings, or a sponsor.

Meetings are mixed level, drop-in, and by donation. Any donation amount is appropriate. A waiver must be signed prior to participating in yoga class.

what it is…

A holistic approach to supporting addiction recovery, Y12SR meetings address the needs of mind, body, and spirit, integrating these three parts together. Modeled from the meetings of 12-step programs, a group sharing circle is followed by an intentional, themed yoga class that includes meditation and breathwork. Y12SR is support for anyone dealing with their own maladaptive or addictive behaviors or affected by those behaviors in others and includes members of all 12-step programs. It will deepen any work that you may be currently doing or jump start your journey of self-discovery.

The yoga portion of the class is accessible to people of any age, size, or ability. Being flexible isn't required to enjoy the benefits of the yoga practice. Postures are verbally guided in a direct way moving from gentle to more dynamic with the invitation to pause in the expression most suitable for you that day. Through practice, the Serenity Prayer becomes tangible as we learn to embody its wisdom:

God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Understanding that some addictions have roots in trauma, meetings have ground rules, and yoga practice is only guided verbally, never through hands-on or manipulative assists. Partner yoga is not a part of Y12SR meetings. Your mat is your space.

what it isn’t…

Y12SR isn't a replacement for treatment, medical advice, group or individual therapy, traditional 12-step support group meetings, or a sponsor. Yoga of 12-Step Recovery is a community-based support to these interventions. It is another piece of the puzzle, another tool, in recovery from addiction.

The atmosphere is unlike any other recovery meeting I've been to. It feels very safe and serene. In other meetings I've had anxiety around sharing, but have never felt so in this space. And I'm learning techniques to practice in my daily living especially in managing anxiety triggers."

"Kate has created a really special space for sharing and progressing through recovery, bringing a new resource and support network that integrates all aspects of addiction- the emotional/mental/physical. Her yoga is accessible for any level of practice, as she offers modifications for poses and is always reminding us to be gentle with ourselves."
